Alexandria featured on The Music – I produced and mixed “Fire and Ice” (1.8m streams so far!), and have produced and mixed her forthcoming single too.

The Favourite featured on AAA backstage – I produced and mixed their debut and sophomore singles.

Izzy Rebel on Cageriot.com – I produced and mixed his debut single “Dancing Through My Tears”, and hopefully we’ll be working together again in the near future.

In the midst of this, it seems trivial to mention “musical successes”, although the last 6 months have been very busy on that count – production for CLEWS, the Vanns, The Dardi Shades and Pacific Avenue, engineering for Josh Pyke, Delta Goodrem and many others, mixing for a host of people including Dress Code, The Venice Queens, Weirdo and the completion of The Two Romans album I started in April last year (the 4 singles released thus far are doing very well).

I also produced and promoted a single by new Canberra based singer Alanna Vullo – my first experience of promotion and with 30k+ streams for a debut artist with no real profile, I’m pretty proud of our efforts!

I’m maybe not quite that bad, but given that my daughter was about to arrive when I last “blogged” and now she’s 16 months old, maybe an update is due.

Somehow I’ve managed to keep a career going through the ups and downs of 2 kids! I’ve been lucky enough to work with some great artists over the last year or so, including Amy Shark (recording acoustic versions of songs from her “Love Monster” album, including “Mess Her Up”), CLEWS (where I got to work with Nick DiDia, as well as co-producing a new song and again alternate versions of their tracks), Ruel and Triple One. This year more than ever I’ve done a lot of independent work – EP and single track productions and mixes for bands such as Pacific Avenue, Sinclaire, Melis and Sons of the East.

April I spent in Switzerland recording an album with “The Two Romans”. Post production and mixing is still happening (sorry guys..it’s coming!) and this is shaping up to be something special…

2017 was easily my best year to date in music. The behemoth that is “Go Farther in Lightness” set itself a lofty target and even so exceeded all expectations. #1 on the Album Chart, 4 ARIA awards for the band, 3 entries in the Hottest 100 Top 10 and the band widely being touted as the best Australian rock band of the moment.

And on a personal level – I got to take home the 2017 Producer of the Year ARIA for my part in it, plus a number of interviews and my first magazine cover/feature with Audio Technology! I’m thoroughly grateful to everyone who played a part in this, and I can’t wait to see where they get to next.

Away from Gangs, I got to work on projects by artists such as Nocturnal Tapes (EP mix), James Edwyn and the Borrowed Band (Album Mix), Castlecomer (produce and mix 4 tracks for their debut album, including the forthcoming single “Move”), C H E L S E A (produced 2 songs, including “Heartstrings” released for the benefit of ICON cancer foundation) and possibly most significantly, I recorded and mixed the cast recording for “Muriel’s Wedding – The Musical”, written by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall. Crazy show, an intense production period but very enjoyable and a great result!

So – more exciting musical adventures to come, but first the new arrival I think….

Still, in an attempt to keep things up to date, a brief list of what I’ve been doing/working on:

– recorded vocals with the sensation that is Babymetal – Slipknot meets J-Pop, currently receiving Triple J and worldwide affection!

– mixed The last release from The Meeting Tree – “Life is Long, Slow Down!” – more tongue in cheek electro hip hop weirdness from the genii (is that even a word) that are Raph Lauren and Joyride.

– more tracking with Gang of Youths – watch this space…

– recorded and mixed Boy and Bear live @ The Horden

– vocal sessions with UK singer/rapper/fan of trainers and fast cars Example

– co-produced and mixed a very special single with Chelsea Stutchbury called “Vincristine” – check it out on Spotify/Youtube.

– recorded and mixed some acoustic bonus tracks for Tonight Alive for the Japanese release of their excellent new album “Limitless”.

– more recording for all the local Sony artists – Delta, Cyrus, Bonnie Anderson, Justice Crew, Jess and Matt.

– and a big band album coming soon with David Campbell…..

Outside of work, I appear to have managed to help keep my son alive for a year. Well done Ollie Bear, your eating ability knows no limits.

As you can see, we’re getting him started young! Oliver James Bear continues to grow (at an obscene rate it seems), and as with all babies he delights and tests his parents in equal measure! but unsurprisingly appears to enjoy music as much as his mum and dad…

First third of this year has seen some exciting releases and work for me. The Meeting Tree EP was released, and got some Triple J love – including 2 songs dedicated to Oliver – “Travelling Bear Blues” and “Oliver’s Song (Don’t Care reprise)”! The Stan Walker album (which I did the lion’s share of engineering on) and Gang of Youths albums were released and reached ARIA nos 7 and 4 respectively – particularly great for GoY who got a Triple J featured album as well.

High-tails “Information” got Triple J playlisted (another great achievement for a band on a small label), and the official launch comes early next month. Also excited to be working with Jacob Pearson as part of his development with Sony.

Hoping to have a good number of tracks that I recorded with Example make his album release this year – including the first single, which I recorded and vocal produced….watch this space.

And mixing work continues for other acts, both in Australia (Patra Kay, Kallias Degree and others) and the UK (Jack Robert Hardman)

The 2nd half of last year included 2 mixes on Dami’s “Heartbeats” album, tracking parts (and producing one track) on Taylor Henderson’s “Burnt Letters” album, tracking duties for Gang of Youths’ and Stan Walker’s forthcoming albums, live mixes for The Holy Holy amongst others, and lots of work with Aussie rap duo Jacki Onassis – check out the Sushi mixtape .

Outside projects include mixing “The Great Unknown” EP for Jack Robert Hardman and several tracks for UK duo IYES, and production on tracks with Sydney bands Edens March and High-tails (the latter playlisted on Triple J) amongst others.

2014 ended with two bangs – the smaller of the two being a Grammy nomination for my work on Pharell’s “GIRL” album! The bigger…the arrival of my son Oliver James Bear on 29th December! Baby and mum doing well…

2015 has already started in busy fashion – mixes for the new Meeting Tree EP, a new High-Tails single, work with new Select music booking The Lulu Raes and tracking with UK rapper/singer Example….and looking forward to some good tracking sessions booked in for March….

Anyway, some CV updates:

– Since “Come With Me” for Ricky Martin was released, I’ve worked with him twice more – for singles “Adrenalina”and his World Cup song “Vida”. Hopefully further Ricky sessions coming this year for his album.

– I got to record Alicia Keys twice, including for her duet with Pharrell on “I Know Who You Are”…which features on his G I R L album. And they remembered to credit me! which was nice.

– lots and lots of acoustic sessions with local Sony acts (including Samantha Jade, Taylor Henderson, Dami Im but also bands like Holy Holy and Tonight alive), and also international acts (Foxes, The 1975 amongst others). These sessions are initially for artist VEVO pages and also the Sony “Hargrave Lane” TV series currently being screened on GO! I believe, but have also been used as B-Sides on physical releases for Taylor, Dami, Nathaniel, and The Collective amongst others. Many of them are here on my Showreel playlist

– Talking of The Collective, I’ve recorded their current single “Burn the Bright Lights”, and I hope to be recording further songs with them. Other Sony Projects included recording Samantha Jade’s “Up” (official Socceroos World Cup song – that’s 2 World Cup songs this year!), and I also recorded and mixed the B-Side – a cover of INXS’s “Never Tear Us Apart” with her live band.

– Outside of Sony, I’ve been working with a couple of very exciting independent bands. I recorded and mixed 2 singles for summery indie popsters High-tails, both of which got picked up by Triple J via their Unearthed website, and the 2nd of these, “Bending Over Backwards” got playlisted and was in the Top 20 most played tracks earlier this year. The EP is now finished, and will be released later this year. Have also been recording Edens March, a band from the Bloc Party/Coldplay template, and we’ve finished 2 songs with them (with a 3rd in the pipeline).

– unsigned buzz band British band IYES asked me to mix a single for them – “Til Infiniti” ended up getting more than 100,000 plays (edit – make that nearly 400k!) on Soundcloud, featured on multiple blogs and even making it back over to Triple J in Australia! We’re slowly taking over…
